History
Nació como Villa bajo jurisdicción monástica en 1511.
Se constituyó como Ayuntamiento constitucional moderno entre 1833 y 1834.
Fijó su término municipal actual en 1857 tras absorber a seis pueblos vecinos (Ayoluengo, Lorilla, Moradillo del Castillo, San Andrés de Montearados, Santa Coloma de Rudrón y Valdeajos).
A nivel histórico y social, su trayectoria destaca por ser la cuna del pedagogo Don Andrés Manjón (nacido en el municipio en 1846) y por albergar en su término el primer y único campo petrolífero terrestre de la historia de España (Ayoluengo, descubierto en 1964 y explotado comercialmente hasta 2017)
